How it is worked out

  • The exemption is the lowest of three amounts: the HRA you received; rent paid minus 10% of salary; and 50% of salary in a 50% city, or 40% elsewhere.
  • Salary here means basic salary plus dearness allowance.
  • 50% cities are Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, and from tax year 2026-27 also Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmedabad. Surat is a 40% city.
  • HRA exemption is available only in the old tax regime.

Questions people ask

Can I claim HRA if I pay rent to my parents?

Yes, if you genuinely pay the rent and they show it as income in their return. Keep a rent agreement and bank records of the payments.

Do I need my landlord’s PAN?

Employers usually ask for it when rent is more than ₹1 lakh in a year.

I do not get HRA. Can I still claim anything for rent?

In the old regime, a separate deduction for rent may be available in some cases. Ask us whether you qualify.
