How it is worked out

  • New regime: a standard deduction of ₹75,000 from salary or pension, then 0% up to ₹4 lakh, rising by 5% for every ₹4 lakh, and 30% above ₹24 lakh.
  • No tax when taxable income is ₹12 lakh or less. Just above ₹12 lakh, marginal relief keeps the tax no higher than the income above ₹12 lakh.
  • Old regime: a standard deduction of ₹50,000 and the deductions you enter, then slabs of 5%, 20% and 30%. The tax-free limit is ₹2.5 lakh below age 60, ₹3 lakh from 60 to 79 and ₹5 lakh at 80 or above, with a rebate of up to ₹12,500 when taxable income is ₹5 lakh or less.
  • Surcharge above ₹50 lakh (10%), ₹1 crore (15%), ₹2 crore (25%) and, in the old regime only, ₹5 crore (37%), with marginal relief. 4% health and education cess is added to the total.

Questions people ask

Which regime should I choose?

The one that gives lower tax for your figures. The new regime is the default. Salaried people can usually choose each year when they file; people with business income have limited chances to switch, so check before you change.

Does this include capital gains?

No. Gains on shares, mutual funds and property are taxed at special rates. Use the capital gains calculator for those.

Are the slabs different for tax year 2026-27?

No. The slabs and rebate for tax year 2026-27 are the same as for income earned in 2025-26.
